Have in mind a budget for your project...what you are willing to spend to get that new kitchen of your dreams. This budget comes with choices of cabinets, appliances, counter tops, flooring, wall covering (paint, paper, tile etc.) sinks, faucets, and lighting.
- The largest cost item in this overwhelming selection is usually cabinetry. So this is the place you may be able to save money if needed. However it is also the most visual and makes the biggest statement about your home. So don't short change yourself on quality here if you don't have to.
- The second largest cost item are the counters. Choices of stone, laminate, tile, wood and even concrete abound. Here you should pick something to compliment your cabinetry in appearance. Even in the stone family choices there are many different price groups. Choosing a lower cost per square foot stone can save you hundreds of dollars. You can also choose stone looking laminates to greatly reduce cost and still get a quality look. This would be one place to save a lot as well.
- Appliances could be second largest cost depending on your choices. Large refrigerators and fancy stoves build the cost quite a bit and this would be another place to save money. Be selective, avoid those extra options if you don't need them. You can save $2000.00 on a refrigerator choice alone without sacrificing the look of the kitchen. Remember all refrigerators will keep you food cold.
